CUTTING the number of immigrants coming into Britain each year is a top priority for Forest of Dean MP Mark Harper as he enters the first week of his new job as Immigration Minister.
Mr Harper was promoted this week in Prime Minister David Cameron’s first major reshuffle of the Cabinet.
The Government has pledged to cut the net immigration figures to tens of thousands.
Estimated net migration was 252,000 in the year to September 2011. This is similar to 255,000 in the year to September 2010 meaning Mr Harper has a tough challenge on his hands.
He said he is committed to reaching the target.
