M27 police chase after ‘illegal immigrants’ flee lorry

Four men believed to be illegal immigrants burst out of the back of a lorry in Hampshire and were chased down the M27 motorway by police.

Three were arrested but one escaped, police said.

Hampshire Police closed both motorway carriageways between Hamble Bridge and junction 9 at Fareham at 11:56 BST and scrambled helicopters.

The lorry driver, who had driven from Italy, called them after seeing men jump out of the back of his vehicle.

Air support was called in from Bournemouth and a rolling roadblock put in place. The three men were caught shortly before 13:00 BST.

Police described the fourth man as being of “Chinese extraction” and wearing dark clothing.

The road has now been reopened.
